Writing Competitions OLMC 2025

Welcome.
The links on this site will be updated throughout Semester 1 as different organisations publish relevant details
on the various competitions they offer. Apart from being good fun, these competitions are a very useful way
for you to develop your writing skills in different genres beyond the confines of the classroom. If you are
interested in participating in any competition, read all the information on the links provided. If you do enter
any of these competitions, let your English teacher know. When you enter a competetion, and you are asked for
contact details, always use your school email address.
Feel free to enter the same composition into different competitions. You might, for example, have a really
good piece of creative or persuasive writing that could easily be adapted to suit the requirements of a range
of different competitions.

Almost all of these competitions are free to enter. On the next page [ 'Competitions Years 7 - 12 ' ],
note the opening and closing dates.

What you need to know before entering any writing competition.

Follow these basic rules for prose. These would be good rules to follow for all written tasks.
1. Font --> Times New Roman, Calibri or Arial--> Size 12
2. Line Spacing --> Double Spacing.
3. Give your narrative, prose composition a title. You need to do better than, ' A Story ' or ' A Story ! '
3. Paragraphs. Carefully crafted paragraphs will immediately show you have planned, drafted and presented
your piece of writing with pride and attention to detail & structure.
4. Plan and draft your work. Make sure someone reads your draft in order to eliminate spelling and
grammatical errors. It is very difficult to see our own errors. For example, there are some very deliberate
errors on this site for you to find and let the 'contact page' know.
5. Submit plain text only. Do not include/use illustrations, colour or unusual fonts. Such inclusions may lead
to an afternoon detention supervised by the principal Ms Farrugia.
6.  ...and if you have to include dialogue in your short story...
